Photo Intern to Full-Time Employment

Christine Waters, 21, is a senior at NYU in the Gallatin School of Individualized Study

While most college seniors are stressing about getting a job by graduation, Christine Waters is enjoying the perks of job security, with  a full-time job she loves.  Waters, a part-time senior in the Gallatin School of Individualized Study works Monday to Friday from 9 to 5:30, and earns a salary that pays for her apartment in midtown.

The tall and thin blonde has been working at Quadriga, a Paris-based agency that represents fashion photographers, since the spring of 2010. She started off as an intern and she is now working as a full-time Junior Agent at the agency. Quadriga opened up  N.Y. headquarters in April 2010,  and Waters began working for them in May 2010.

Getting the Job

Karine, [the owner of Quadriga], sent an email out over the NYU fashion listserv. She got about 100 responses and she barely even had time to read all of the resumes. I think [Karine] liked my previous work experience and interest in fashion, which is why I was chosen. Read the rest of this entry »

Forget the Flowers, Glamour
This is High Fashion

Senior Kirby Marzec poses in front of wall art found in Copenhagen. Marzec travelled to Copenhagen during her semester abroad in Prague.

When NYU journalism undergrad Kirby Marzec, 21, went for an interview for a fashion blog internship, she instead, strut across a makeshift runway in a fashion show on the Brooklyn Bridge. While her thin frame, tall stature, and long brown locks may fit the model look criteria, Marzec prefers working behind the scenes, writing about fashion.

Escaping the traditional Friday night beers and hockey game watching, Marzec left the comfort of Buffalo three years ago for New York City to start a career in fashion journalism. She pursues a double major in journalism and communications, and interns at T: The New York Times Style Magazine. She resides in SoHo at the Broome Street NYU residence hall.

Ugly Coffee: While interning at T this summer, I worked part-time as a barista at Cafe Gitane, on Mott and Prince streets, where the people are mean, and the coffee is meaner. Gitane is pretty strict on presentation. A cup of coffee is expected to be served with a foamed milk flower delicately floating on the surface. While I can’t promise that my coffee will look pretty, I am a complete coffee snob when it comes to taste.

Escaping the City: During the fall semester of my junior year, I studied abroad in Prague. I like to refer to that semester as a vacation with a little bit of school involved. Read the rest of this entry »

How Generation Y Is Transforming Fashion Now

Raymond Chu, a 20-year-old NYU student, doesn’t follow fashion trends. He preferred military jackets and three-piece suits a la Indiana Jones and Fred Astaire in high school, and was always considered overdressed. Now, instead of mockery he receives praise from friends and strangers alike. Repeatedly featured on street-style photography blog The Sartorialist, and chosen as a 2008 finalist for Esquire’s Best Dressed Real Man, Chu feels flattered by the recognition, posting these photographs online for his 1,000 Facebook friends to view.

From Facebook to Twitter to blogging, Generation Y live their lives online—and nowhere more so than in fashion. In this public celebration, camera-loving Gen Yers post outfits, clothing and inspiration on the Internet, using this platform as a way for the fashion-minded to share ideas. With the unlimited possibility of the web, Generation Y has made fashion more influential, more accessible, and certainly more global.

“Fashion is no longer a one-way street to consumers, but now a two-way street,” says Susan Cernek, senior fashion editor for Glamour.com, the online counterpart to the magazine.

The Internet has drastically shortened connection time, and communication is now instantaneous around the globe. If traditional print magazines rejected online components, they would be far behind the times. Still, with the never-ending flow of online outlets, many readers look elsewhere to find their daily dose of fashion.
